How to store
Place firm, fresh pears in a brown paper bag to ripen. Store at room temperature for two to three days or until slightly soft. Most varieties are ripe when they yield to gentle pressure at the stem end. If ripe pears need to be stored, place in a plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper or drawer, away from vegetables for up to three to five days.

There are over 5,000 varieties of pears grown throughout the world. Look for pears without bruises or cuts. The skin color is not a good indicator of ripeness because the color of some pear varieties does not change as the pear ripens. Pear colors can range from green to golden yellow to tawny red depending on the variety. Select pears on how they will be used. For baking, a pear should be fairly firm to the touch. If the pear will be eaten out of hand, look for ones that yield to gentle pressure at the stem end.
